In order to support seamless and straightforward research and education collaborations across borders, NRENs and regional networking organisations (RRENs) are progressively changing from organisations which essentially provide connectivity, to organisations which deliver an array of value-added services on top of high-speed internet.
Network performance monitoring tools, identity federations (eduGAIN), mobility/roaming (eduroam), interoperable videoconferencing (eduCONF), cloud-based computing and storage services and other collaboration-facilitating tools are critical to optimising the way scientific research is done, and how education is delivered in a global environment.
